Getting Acquainted with Germany

Germany is geographically relatively small – as a US state, it would rank midway between New Mexico and Montana. Nonetheless, with 80 million people, the population density is among the highest among industrial nations worldwide. And it may come as a surprise that some 20% of today’s population – roughly three times the current US ratio – is not native German, with sizable communities of Turks, Italians and Poles firmly integrated in both its society and workforce.

Germany has a thriving export-oriented economy focused on high-value, high-tech industries and products. Germans are proud to possess what is one of the world’s most highly skilled workforces. Having long ago recognized that it cannot be competitive in low wage or low margin industries, Germany has consistently opted for investment in the future in the form of education and highly specialized vocational training.

But simply understanding these differences earns you and your business respect in the eyes of your potential customers and partners. It saves you resources – time and money – by helping you to avoid disappointing pitfalls and dead ends.
